Users Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters
New research indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such medications should be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically have a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Experts believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
People who have come off the medication report a intense return of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger activating and you become ravenous," said an individual.
The struggle is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Use is more common among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle support.
